A Pebble and a Pen

A Pebble and a Pen PDF ebook download This historical fiction has been written for an audience of 5th-to-8th graders, but I found the story to be an engaging evening read for a grown-up.The 14-year-old girl who is the main character longs to perfect her writing so that she can earn a living as a clerk or penman, and goes to the 1850s schoolhouse where Spencer himself teaches his art.On one level, the book introduces the reader to the foundations of the famous Spencerian penmanship of the nineteenth century. On another, the author has not neglected to carefully create a story for her main character to keep readers interested.Although I am far from the target age for this book, I found that I wanted to continue reading to find out what would happen to this character.

I highly recommend this book to girls who enjoy historical fiction, as well as to grown-ups that would like a gentle introduction to the ideas of Platt Rogers Spencer.
