Illustrated Glossary Of Snow And Ice (Scott Polar Research Institute Special Publication Number 4) PDF ebook download From the Introduction:
"Like all glossaries, this one is a development of many earlier lists, dating back in this case to the beginning of the nineteenth century...The object of this glossary was to cover the minimum number of terms required by anyone concerned with a polar environment. It included not only snow and floating ice but land ice and ice in the atmosphere...Meanwhile it became obvious that a number of new terms were necessary for convenient description of the features that were being discovered and mapped in both the Arctic and Antarctic regions...The present edition, therefore, is more than a re-issue in one volume of the two parts of the "Illustrated ice glossary" published in the Polar Record. It includes new terms, incorporates amendments to existing definitions, and adds some new illustrations. The terms relating to ice in the atmosphere are in conformity with the agreed terminology of the World Meteorological Organisation. But the glossary remains a minimum list.A major addition is that of linguistic equivalents in eight languages."
