Jack and his best friend Billie usually work together for school projects, and he is not too thrilled when the teacher decides to pair him with Alex. Alex is a little bit of a show off when it comes to his math skills, and their partnership requires some negotiation. In the end, Jack realizes that there are lots of ways to win—sometimes by getting the most right answers and sometimes by learning to work well with someone else. This title in the Hey Jack! series shows young readers good examples of how to get along without being too didactic. I liked how the author shows how Jack starts getting into the idea of winning only to get a gentle comeuppance.
