“What was the response from the public and the critics?”

The critics always had a dispute over Hemingway’s works; he was a controversial writer.

You would either love him or hate him. Despite that though, everyone, critics and public alike, do agree that he was one great contributor to literature and his works are a literary legacy.

However, the critics do raise a few issues when it comes to his writing.
